A Gemesys lead (part number 9020-4001) is a lead that was developed by GEC Industrial Controls to allow their Windows based programming software package Gemesys 3 running on a Windows PC to connect to a standard GEM 80 programming port.
This lead was required because at the time of release all standard GEM 80 systems used a 20mA current loop connection to the programming unit. Initially this was a dedicated system programmer that had this 20mA port built in. When the Windows Gemesys 3 software was launched for a Windows PC, running Windows 3, a conversion of the physical signal of the PC’s RS232 serial port to the 20mA GEM 80 programming port was required.
This is exactly what the Gemesys lead does, it has an signal converter built into the large plastic cover that shields the 15 way D type connector that connects to the GEM 80 programming port.

Subsequently any PC based programmer that was required to connect to an original GEM 80 needed one of these units. So whether you are using the ATS UGP, Gemesys 3, or any version of the AGP programming software you will need this signal converter. However if you have one of the newer GEM 80 controllers, specifically the 131, 400 or 500 then these controllers had an RS232 port added onto the spare pins of the programming port D type so a simple RS232 to RS232 lead can be used. These leads were supplied by ATS for their AGP programming software but can be easily made up using a 9 way D type for the PC and a 15 way D type connector for the GEM 80.
Can I still get a 9020-4001 Gemesys Lead?
Because the factory producing these leads has now closed, these leads are no longer available as a product. However the signal conversion is a standard conversion from one signal level to another so this type of connection can be achieved using other the specific signal converters.
GEM 80 Serial 20mA to USB Programming Lead
To remove the requirement for a 9 way RS232 port on your programming PC, we can now supply a universal GEM 80 20mA to USB programming lead as a solution to all of your GEM 80 connection requirements. These leads work with any GEM 80 processor, including Imagem, Programmable Serial Communications and allow the GEM 80 equipment to communicate to a Windows 10 PC running the GEM 80 AGP programming software. They will also work with the much older DOS versions of GEM 80 programming software if you are still using using them.
